School of White Grunt (Haemulon plumierii) keeping watch over their home – United Caribbean, Deerfield Beach, Fl

The United Caribbean feels impressive – rising up from the bottom with proper posture.  The 147 ft steel cargo freight sits outside of Boca Raton Inlet, where it was purposely sank as an artificial reef/wreck project in August 2000.  Before then, however, the UC had turned from a normal cargo liner into a drug and immigrant smuggling taxi in the 90’s, bringing illicit cargo from South America to the East Coast.  After running aground in Rockaway Beach, New York, while carrying 286 illegal immigrants the ship was confiscated and sold.  Sank right here in South Florida as part of the Palm Beach Artificial Reef Program, it now provides a home from an unfathomable amount of ocean life.  Sitting in two sections, the bow and the wheelhouse both provide dark rooms to explore – seemingly everywhere you look, you find something intriguing and beautiful.
