Squirrelfish (Holocentrus adscensionis) – United Caribbean, Deerfield Beach, Fl

Fish display distinct personalities without ever saying a word.  Body posture, movement, and eye contact often says a lot about the individual animal.  Here, a Squirrelfish dispels the myth of its ‘squirrelish’ nature while courageously approaching me and looking at itself in my lens port.  Quite brave for such a small creature, this fish hovered in front of my camera for just long enough for me to snap a few pictures before it became bored with me and slunk away back to its ledge.  I’ve found that fish with larger eyes sometimes take a keen interest in my camera gear, potentially seeing their own reflections and wondering what that ‘other fish’ is doing so close to a human.
