NGC 2170 – Angel Nebula – Monoceros

While shooting images at Chiefland in Feb, 2008, Tony Hallas suggested that I shoot my color data at 2X2 instead of the 1X1 I was starting, especially on a faint object like the Black Net Nebula in Monoceros – NGC 2170.  So I changed over to 2X2 on all my RGBs.  I didn’t have time to capture all the data I wanted (and Tony suggested) to get a really good image, but I decided to prematurely process the data I had which amounts to only a few hours total.  I processed it because Joe Mize in Chiefland is questioning the efficacy of doing anything 2X2.  The above NGC 2170 image is anemic compared to what I ultimately want but I thing the short exposure image validates Tony’s concept of Lum 1X1 and layered RGBs 2X2.  I should have gotten more data last month but got distracted by Hubble’s Variable Neb, the Crab, Orion Neb, Hickson 44 with asteroid 2002 UA2, M87 with core and many more desserts!  This NGC 2170 area is a fascinating subject.
