Mt. Wilson Observatory

During the Summer of 1971 and after successful deployment of the prototype cold camera at Ford Observatory, Mt Wilson superintendent, Larry Bornhurst, provided another unique opportunity – 3 nights at Mt Wilson (5700 ft elevation; 34 deg N) to adapt my cold camera to the 60-inch telescope.  This was a great experience working at a professional observatory on a venerable telescope steeped in history, using a camera of my own design.  Following the cold camera experimentation in ’71 at Ford and Mt Wilson Observatories, a US Letters patent was obtained and exclusive rights for production was granted to Celestron International with numerous cameras being sold internationally.  Thereafter, I was employed for several subsequent summers at Mt Wilson Observatory and Skyline Park.  The sky each night was filled with stars while sitting one mile atop Los Angeles with panoramic views all the way to Catalina Island 65 miles away in the Pacific Ocean.  Links with information about Mt Wilson are found below these images, including a live view webcam thanks to UCLA Department of Physics and Astronomy.
