Furcate Spider Crab (Stenocionops furcatus) – Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach, FL

Cruising the soft sponges looking for a Seahorse to image, I saw some movement – sometimes, the littlest amount of motion is all you need.  Granted, with a crab that has evolved to decorate itself to perfectly and disappear into its surroundings, a little bit of help is needed to spot the creature.  This crab, in particular, had just grabbed a morsel of food just as I was scanning over it, drawing my attention to try and spot the borders of its body.  A claw, two claws, six legs.. This sponge was alive!  I motioned my father over, who leaned down and spotted it for himself – can you see it?
