Bearded Fireworm (Hermodice carunculata) – Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach, Fl

Fireworms are super fascinating – they scrounge the bottom for food, slither over each other without regard, and light up like space mountain when you turn on fluorescent lights.  This particular one was cruising up towards a dead fish where about 15 of his kin were already feasting.  Pushing through the mini gardens of Bugula, I was able to square up for a few shots before he reached the feeding frenzy.  I had to leave the area quickly after this shot because all the worm activity had the water column full of stinging bristles – I was itchy for the next few days, but this picture was worth it.
