Fireworm Frills

Bearded Fireworm (Hermodice carunculata) – Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach, Fl

Fireworms are spectacular subjects to photograph – or even just to watch.  Some are moving sporadically, jerking around, posturing up into the water column; others are much more mellow, slithering methodically across the bottom.  This was a medium sized individual that seemed to be taking the day off, cruising very slowly across the sand.  The ‘rocks’ around him are individual grains of sand, demonstrating how close you have to lean in to grab an image of one of these creatures.
