Bearded Fireworm (Hermodice carunculata) – Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach, Fl

Fireworms are dangerously stunning.  Each one of those white whispy patches contains hundreds of bristles that, when needed, protect the worm from predators.  When agitated, the worm can release these bristles into the water column, each bristle penetrating fish, or human, skin to inject a powerful neurotoxin which produces intense sting and pain.  Under the fluoro lights, these animals are enchanting, boasting radiant greens, yellows, and oranges.  Remember the old adage ‘look, but do not touch’..
