Inside the Urchin’s Defense

Long-Spined Urchin (Diadema antillarum) – Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach, FL

Looking beyond the spiny defense of an urchin takes a steady hand.  Moving in tight to image the ‘body’ of this urchin was tough because of the long length of its spines (~15cm).  Once in position, I could see the periproctal cone (sphere) and freckled ridges – a sight I have rarely leaned in far enough to enjoy.  Click the image to zoom and ‘lean in’ for yourself.
